Joan Jonas
Joan Jonas was born in New York City, USA, 1936. Jonas is an American visual artist and an innovator of video and performance art. Her influences expand from performance and video, conceptual art and theatre and other visual art. In 1958, she received a Bachelor's Degree in Art History from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She later studied sculpture and drawing at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, she soon received an MFA in Sculpture from Columbia University in 1965. She is one of the most important female artists to arise in the late 1960's and early 1970's, she was a central figure in the performance art movement. Jonas began her career as a sculptor and since 1968, her practise has explored ways of seeing, the rhythms of ritual and the authority of objects and gestures. Jonas is unbelievably valued in the international art world.
