Fay Godwin
Fay Godwin was born 17th February 1931, in Berlin, Germany and died 27th May 2005, in Hastings, England. Godwin is a British photographer greatly known for her black and white landscapes of the British countryside and coast. She received no formal training only what she had taught herself through family pictures in the mid-1960's. This eventually lead on to portraits, reportage and through her love for walking she was inspired to pursue landscape photography. She has influenced many other landscape photographers of her era. She went on to produce portraits of well known writers, photographing almost every major literacy figure in 1970's and 1980's England. Godwin often photographed isolated and remote areas of the British landscape and produced many wonderful pastoral scenes as well as contrasting urban landscapes. She is also renowned for her work as an environmentalist, her interest reflected in numerous of her best=known images that observe the difficult relationships and tensions between man and nature.

Inspiration.
I was most inspired by her work because she created her landscape prints in Kent & Sussex and I have the opportunity to find the locations of these shoots. The compositions are effective as Godwin incorporates the foregrounds in with the backgrounds. There is always a point to focus on. I aim to visit known landmarks to create work of a similar style, I am interested in creating new black and white imagery, and also shooting from a low angle to recreate this work. |
